  • We were aiming for the spa resort of Belolurikha, which in the route-book is 700 kilometres – a massive haul for the seriously older cars, and, on top of this, there is an additional 120 kms of re-route.

  • Garrick Staples Jnr. ended the day on the back of a truck with his VW Beetle Cabriolet, as the rear suspension - a special affair with rose-joints and much else from the desert-racing Baja racers - has given up, after a determined battle with Gerry Crown in the big Holden.

  • Most people however are more concerned with running repairs. The Alvis of Rudi Friedrichs and Lennox McNeely looks more like a broken dragonfly, with its wings off, wheels removed, seats out and various bits scattered on the grass. The Volvo of Nicholas Pryor looks a worry, it is one of several cars with broken shock-absorber mountings, and an engine mounting has also snapped. A Bilstein shock absorber is having an eyelet reinforced with additional welding. The Lagonda of Maarten Hoeben and Jan Bruintjes is on a truck to the Russian border, having suffered a broken half-shaft. David and Jo Roberts are in town with their Sunbeam hoping to fix up a broken chassis. The punishment of the last few days is taking its toll.

  • Gerry Crown has been going well, car wise, but looks exhausted, and he has an arm in a splint – the rally doctors have decided that his wrist needed bandages as a result of all the constant gear-changing, so he has decided to hand over the driving to Matt Bryson

  • We left Russia behind us today, crossing into Kazakhstan, to be welcomed by slick blue-shirted helpers from our agents, Kyrgyz Concept, and with good roads and easy run, we made it by mid-afternoon into Semey. The border was a slick affair – our local helpers delivered what they had promised, much to everyone’s relief.

  • We had hopes that the border transaction into Russia would go well. It was brilliant last time, we were all processed with a salute and a snap of the heels and stamps were thumped into passports with sense of urgency. Things have got worse since we were last here.

  • This is the last full day in Mongolia – it probably will be regarded by everyone as the best scenery yet. That’s the trouble with Mongolia….it gets better with every passing day, you dive deeper and deeper into wilder, more remote terrain as you inch to the far border on the top left hand corner of the map
